“But tho’ an old man, I am but a young gardener.”

Hello, I must be going, 6

The more determined men become to despise the teaching of Christ, the more zealous should godly ministers be to assert it and the more strenuous their efforts to preserve entire. And more than that, by their diligence to ward off Satan’s attack. John Calvin My study of same-sex and heterosexual attraction kept asserting that the… Read More Hello, I must be going, 6

Thlipsis

This past week I have been reading Cornelis Venema’s The Promise of the Future. It is an excellent book and well worth a pastor’s read. It was in Part IV on how the future is marked with ‘Signs of the Times’ that got me thinking and writing of what has been a month of thlipsis that intensified… Read More Thlipsis

The Ninety and Nine

Our Wednesday service has been reading through Luke’s gospel consecutively each week. We have just concluded Luke 15, a favorite chapter of many. Jesus tells there the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost sons. Those of you who have read Luke 15 with frequency as I have done and have… Read More The Ninety and Nine

The Clarity of Scripture

Sometimes I am able to negotiate a combined Christmas/birthday expense to gain a significant collection or set of books. Last year it was a 50% off sale of the New Studies in Biblical Theology Series (edited by D.A. Carson) offered by Westminster Seminary bookstore. My advice is to read as many of these as you… Read More The Clarity of Scripture

Robert M. McCheyne and The B-I-B, L-E

2013 is the year the Episcopal Church, well, The Diocese of New Jersey anyway, has discovered reading the Bible. I was thrilled to hear the presentation in our minister’s meeting of last September because the reading and particularly the hearing of the Bible preached is God’s primary means of grace. The cycle of local ministry… Read More Robert M. McCheyne and The B-I-B, L-E

What is the Gospel?

Gospel means “Good News.” It is an announcement of what God has done to save us, a remarkable truth that we could never learn from any other source than God’s saving Word. Because of his love, God sent his son into the world: Jesus Christ who is fully God and fully man. Jesus always lived… Read More What is the Gospel?

New Clothes

As an Anglican I wear vestments to lead worship. In England I robed in a vestry, in the United States I robe in a sacristy. I prefer the term “vestry” but I can’t use it back in the USA without causing confusion. A Vestry is PEOPLE, to misquote Robert Thorn. When you have robed in… Read More New Clothes

Getting Out!

One of the fruits of today’s conferences is the ability to watch/listen through LiveStream in real time or in free video/audio recordings. Here is just one of the excellent presentations of The Gospel Coalition Conference, 2011 that I attended before Holy Week. Tim Keller speaks on Exodus 14. It is about an hour so brew… Read More Getting Out!

The first full day in the garden today & the joy of Helleborus niger. Have a great weekend.
Today’s joy: winter amaryllis within and mahonia without. Can you spot the pollinator? It’s humming away.
Snug and warm in the Camden Co. Community Greenhouse propagating lobelia and potting on geraniums. It will get busier in here as we get closer to our big plant sale on May 6.
Finished a Christmas gift on the Eve of Candlemas. It was an excellent and accessible read by @michaelrosarian
Today’s joy: Mahonia, the first to flower in 2023’s gardening year. The earliest it’s ever flowered. I caught its citrus scent before I spotted the blooms.
Happy New Year from all of us. Today joy: Cornus sanguinea ’Midwinter Fire’
