Relax in 1564…

“Most people go to the country or the ocean to relax. I go to the 16th and 17th centuries,” is a light-hearted truth about me and explains today’s entry. After a fruitless search on Netflix for the documentary film God’s Outlaw on William Tyndale, Netflix had created a new “Recommended for Henry” list. I then… Read More Relax in 1564…

“The Doctor” is in

This past week George Conger wrote in The Church of England Newspaper on the recent report by the statisticians of The Episcopal Church to our Executive Council. You can read the article here. The report catalogues a 10 year decline in all quantifiable areas. I want you to take note of how “These speak to… Read More “The Doctor” is in

My Favorite Jesus Film

The ten to fifteen hours of weekly sermon preparation have made posting a blog quite a challenge. I enjoy writing, but my teaching and preaching in the local congregation to which God called me must come first. The other week I was asked by one of our life group leaders if I could recommend any… Read More My Favorite Jesus Film

A Christian’s Story from North Korea

Nearly everyone who attended the Lausanne Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, last year (2010) agreed that the testimony of the young North Korean woman was one of the dramatic high points of the gathering. Her story of sacrifice, anger, salvation, and courage must be seen by every committed Christian. Not only is she inspiring,… Read More A Christian’s Story from North Korea

In the Lee-Side of Christ

The older I am, the further I seem to fall short; the more conscious I become of my need of grace. That’s why I have been so blessed in the writing of Works Worth Declaring by Douglas Taylor. Douglas is dying of an inoperable cancer. I look for his entries every day. He along with… Read More In the Lee-Side of Christ

Brother and Friend

I have just heard that a brother-in-Christ I admired from afar, Douglas Taylor, Assistant Editor at the Banner of Truth for more than 14 years, was recently diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. On Tuesday June 7, 2011, Douglas began a blog that can be accessed here, in which he explains his motivation for writing and the intriguing title… Read More Brother and Friend

Enraptured

Okay, I had three different people ask me about American Harold Camping’s latest on today’s (May 21, 2011) rapture of souls at 1800hrs, then the end of the world in the Second Coming in October, joined to the expiration (do calendars expire or run out?) of the Mayan calendar in 2012. It’s taken nearly ten… Read More Enraptured

The “Out of Body” Experience

“I am not in church very often these days, you know how it is. But technology is awesome. When I can’t make it to church there’s tons of great pastors online with sermons!” “I am not always so keen to hear the sermon. Sometimes my attention wanders. But I’m generally there, week by week, in… Read More The “Out of Body” Experience

Living in Macy’s Window

One of my favorite ways to describe ministry’s on-display-life is to use the metaphor of the department store window. “You live your life in the front of Macy’s department store window, it’s all on display for the congregation,” is what I usually say. In my earlier days in ministry I must confess that I used… Read More Living in Macy’s Window

Getting Out!

One of the fruits of today’s conferences is the ability to watch/listen through LiveStream in real time or in free video/audio recordings. Here is just one of the excellent presentations of The Gospel Coalition Conference, 2011 that I attended before Holy Week. Tim Keller speaks on Exodus 14. It is about an hour so brew… Read More Getting Out!

The first full day in the garden today & the joy of Helleborus niger. Have a great weekend.
Today’s joy: winter amaryllis within and mahonia without. Can you spot the pollinator? It’s humming away.
Snug and warm in the Camden Co. Community Greenhouse propagating lobelia and potting on geraniums. It will get busier in here as we get closer to our big plant sale on May 6.
Finished a Christmas gift on the Eve of Candlemas. It was an excellent and accessible read by @michaelrosarian
Today’s joy: Mahonia, the first to flower in 2023’s gardening year. The earliest it’s ever flowered. I caught its citrus scent before I spotted the blooms.
Happy New Year from all of us. Today joy: Cornus sanguinea ’Midwinter Fire’
