The Vicar's Garden

“But tho’ an old man, I am but a young gardener.”

Hello, I must be going, 7

The more determined men become to despise the teaching of Christ, the more zealous should godly ministers be to assert it and the more strenuous their efforts to preserve entire. And more than that, by their diligence to ward off Satan’s attack. John Calvin As my study drew to a close and I realized how… Read More Hello, I must be going, 7

Puzzling over Lent

With one of the liturgical seasons coming to a close and with a big Sunday on the horizon — we’re not talking Epiphany and Super Bowl but Lent and chocolate bunnies or eggs — a brief comment on the time of the year just passing may be in order. Peter Leithart has been blogging about… Read More Puzzling over Lent

Brother and Friend

I have just heard that a brother-in-Christ I admired from afar, Douglas Taylor, Assistant Editor at the Banner of Truth for more than 14 years, was recently diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. On Tuesday June 7, 2011, Douglas began a blog that can be accessed here, in which he explains his motivation for writing and the intriguing title… Read More Brother and Friend

Christ is the Sea of Sweetness

After a great Easter Day of worship and preaching spent the time on Monday and Tuesday this week doing a long list of chores that were neglected since, ahem, since Lent began. My wife lovingly called it “an Easter miracle”. I did have a read of a bit more John Flavel. His complete works are… Read More Christ is the Sea of Sweetness

Chicken or Egg?

Evangelism or social involvement – Chicken or Egg? I’ve written of the tension between the Gospel of the Left proclaimed by liberal denominations that is all about social justice and the Gospel of the Right which is all about evangelism. I’ve just had a very cool breakthrough that is so Third Way… May is ministry… Read More Chicken or Egg?

“PB” is not for Peanut Butter

PB is for Presiding Bishop. One of the changes in polity I’ve had to get used to since my return to the United States has been the subtle differences between the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England and The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. What I’ve noticed is how the Presiding Bishop’s… Read More “PB” is not for Peanut Butter

The first full day in the garden today & the joy of Helleborus niger. Have a great weekend.
Today’s joy: winter amaryllis within and mahonia without. Can you spot the pollinator? It’s humming away.
Snug and warm in the Camden Co. Community Greenhouse propagating lobelia and potting on geraniums. It will get busier in here as we get closer to our big plant sale on May 6.
Finished a Christmas gift on the Eve of Candlemas. It was an excellent and accessible read by @michaelrosarian
Today’s joy: Mahonia, the first to flower in 2023’s gardening year. The earliest it’s ever flowered. I caught its citrus scent before I spotted the blooms.
Happy New Year from all of us. Today joy: Cornus sanguinea ’Midwinter Fire’
