Hello, I must be going, 7

The more determined men become to despise the teaching of Christ, the more zealous should godly ministers be to assert it and the more strenuous their efforts to preserve entire. And more than that, by their diligence to ward off Satan’s attack. John Calvin As my study drew to a close and I realized how… Read More Hello, I must be going, 7

Thlipsis

This past week I have been reading Cornelis Venema’s The Promise of the Future. It is an excellent book and well worth a pastor’s read. It was in Part IV on how the future is marked with ‘Signs of the Times’ that got me thinking and writing of what has been a month of thlipsis that intensified… Read More Thlipsis

The Ninety and Nine

Our Wednesday service has been reading through Luke’s gospel consecutively each week. We have just concluded Luke 15, a favorite chapter of many. Jesus tells there the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost sons. Those of you who have read Luke 15 with frequency as I have done and have… Read More The Ninety and Nine

Give ’em Watts, boys!

I first read of Isaac Watts as a boy learning American history at school in that battle cry, “Give ’em Watts, boys!” at the battle of Springfield, New Jersey. Over time I spotted his name in hymnals as the author of the some of the most famous hymns in evangelical Christendom. It happened this week… Read More Give ’em Watts, boys!

Irrational Numbers

We’ve just returned from our vacation in the Adirondacks. Part of the offerings where we were staying was a series of seminar talks by a well-known Christian celebrity with a very successful women’s ministry. What was so startling in the talks was her use of the Scriptures. Being in my little embattled corner as a… Read More Irrational Numbers

Summer’s here, and that means…

Here at St. Mary’s we pick-up our verse by verse study of Paul’s letter to the Romans. This life-changing letter has been a focus each summer since 2010. This year is the last. We started at the final great hinge of the letter, Romans 12.1-2, two Sundays ago. And as we go through the 40… Read More Summer’s here, and that means…

The first full day in the garden today & the joy of Helleborus niger. Have a great weekend.
Today’s joy: winter amaryllis within and mahonia without. Can you spot the pollinator? It’s humming away.
Snug and warm in the Camden Co. Community Greenhouse propagating lobelia and potting on geraniums. It will get busier in here as we get closer to our big plant sale on May 6.
Finished a Christmas gift on the Eve of Candlemas. It was an excellent and accessible read by @michaelrosarian
Today’s joy: Mahonia, the first to flower in 2023’s gardening year. The earliest it’s ever flowered. I caught its citrus scent before I spotted the blooms.
Happy New Year from all of us. Today joy: Cornus sanguinea ’Midwinter Fire’
